Google Maps App Update

Google has rolled out yet another update for the Maps Navigation app on Android. And in turn offered another reminder that the Maps app can be used for quite a bit more than just getting turn-by-turn directions in those times when you have no idea where your destination point is located. That being said, this latest update brings the app up to version 5.10.0 and it looks like one that Places users will be happy to see.
The updated app is available (as one would expect) by way of the Android Market and comes as a 6.49MB download and will run on Android devices with 1.6 or later. Of course, the catch with that is not every feature of Maps will be available for every version of Android. But that, that is a story for another day and today we are going to focus on the new that has arrived with 5.10.0. According to the what’s new section, the version 5.10.0 update adds to ability to;
- See Places you rated 4-stars and 5-stars on the map.
- Attach photos to reviews of Places.
And that about sums it up this time. Overall a small update, but like mentioned earlier — one that should make those who regularly use places a bit happier. With that, those looking for the update may want to fire up the Android Market on their device as the web version (at least as of this posting) is still reflecting the previous update (from August) as being the most recent. Needless to say, we would expect that to change sooner rather than later and in fact, may already be done by the time you read this post. Bottom line, Maps Navigation is just one nice feature that Android users have available for them and it seems Google is intent on rolling out regular updates.

New Forum is up and running!

Some of you may have already noticed but I put up a forum last night. You can access the forum via the top menu bar of the blog or directly at http://androidinvasion.us/forum/
I will still be blogging here on the Android Invasion blog, the forum is just an addition. At first I was going to create a forum just for the new LG Esteem but then I thought about how I constantly am switching phones and having a dedicated LG Esteem forum would just be one more place I would have to keep up with. So what I did was setup forums here on Android Invasion for all the phone companies and manufactures.
MetroPCS stand in the mall

I was in the mall today and passed by a MetroPCS stand so I deiced to ask the guy working there if he knew anything about the new LG Esteem. At first he acted like he didn’t know anything about it. Then after talking for a minute he said that he knew about it and that he got an email saying the release date would be pushed back because of photo’s that leaked onto the internet.
This is the first I have heard of someone saying the phone would be pushed back due to internet leaks. The rumors that have been circling the internet keep saying the phone will be released sooner than expected. The guy could have just been making it up for all I know. I’m hoping MetroPCS releases the pricing info so that I can preorder the phone.
LG Esteem Fund

I just received my first check from google for the advertisements on the website and it was for $104. This will be going to the purchase of an LG Esteem once they become available.

Huawei M835 – Update

Well, I was glad to see that the Huawei M835 has a really simple root method. Just download and install the gingerbreak app onto the phone, enable USB debugging and run the app.
The metro bloatware loaded on this phone really slows it down and needed to be removed to recover as much usable memory as possible.
Since I have only owned an Optimus M and Samsung Indulge android phone so far I don’t like how the M835 changes the order of the main keys on the phone like the home button, menu button, and back button. It took a little while to get used to the new button positioning. The phone has a green call and red End Call button on the bottom of the phone. I can see this being a good feature for first time smartphone users however I keep looking for the end call button on the screen. It would be nice to have both options to end calls.
One last thing the I don’t like on the M835 is that the main buttons like Home, Menu, Back, search, are all touch sensitive and not physical buttons. That in itself is OK, but the back light does not stay on and without physical buttons to feel its hard to find the correct key without just guessing and then making the correct selection once they light up.
I have not had a whole lot of time to play with the phone, I’ve just been using it as a normal phone so far. This weekend I should have some more time to mess with it.
@MetroPCS @Samsung Galaxy Admire

New phone ready for MetroPCS stores, the samsung galaxy admire.
I would look at it as a lower end model of the Galaxy Indulge. With the Indulge being so horrible I don’t even want to try this thing. The only good thing I can make of it is that they got rid of the dumb slide out keyboard and it has android 2.3.
Back camera is 3.2 megapixels and there is no front camera.
Processor is 800mhz (drop from the indulge)
2GB SD card (you will replace this anyways)
Also Samsung is telling employee’s to sell the phone as MetroPCS’s first android 2.3 phone. Did they really not provide any updates to gingerbread for Indulge customers just so they could market their next phone this way?
